Ogmore Goes from Strength to Strength

The Ogmore Centre Trust continues to prove the importance of extra curricular training to young people’s development - not only improving their performance in curriculum subjects, sports and arts but also enhancing vital social skills.

The Centre has recently announced its attendance figures for the first 7 months of 2002/03 financial period and as you will see below the total number of young people attending education, sports and arts courses at the Centre in this period has risen by 29% (2,784 to 3,582), against the same period last year. Young people attending courses at Ogmore stay on a residential basis for 2 ½ - 5 days.

Roger Lewis, Chairman of the Trust said,

“We are greatly encouraged by these figures.  The team at the Ogmore Centre Trust are doing a great job working in partnership with the South Wales community and beyond to give young people an experience of a life-time at Ogmore by Sea.”

The Ogmore Centre Trust was established in 1998 to take over the management of the Schools’ residential centre in Ogmore-by Sea from its previous owners, Bridgend County Borough Council.  The Centre’s success since then has been a striking vindication of the decision to keep the Centre open.  Now recognised as a Charitable Trust, the Centre has grown far beyond expectations both in terms of the numbers of young people accommodated and the breadth of courses offered to them. This has been recognised by the Local Authority, whose recent agreement to extend the Trust’s present lease on the property from 6 years to 99 years, demonstrates its confidence in the Trust.

The Ogmore Centre Trust is situated at Ogmore by Sea, on a hill overlooking the Welsh Heritage Coast. The Centre can cater for a maximum of 184 young people sleeping in dormitory accommodation spread over 4 residential blocks. As well as providing education, sport and art courses, the Centre is able to offer residential facilities to youth organisations requiring accommodation for self programmed weekends.

Ros Williams. Former Director of the Trust said,

The extra curricula courses at Ogmore are quality education experiences offering fun and challenging pathways of learning.  The success of ‘Ogmore’ is a testament to this endorsed by the awards and funding the Centre is now receiving.  Ogmore Centre Trust has been nominated from the region for the final judging for the Queens Jubilee Award for the work done for the community and The Roald Dahl Foundation has provided a grant of £5000, to assist under privileged children with course fees. We are justly proud.
